Issue: October 28, 2010
Proposition 19, which would decriminalize possession of up to an ounce of recreational marijuana for Californians over age 21, has torn apart the Sacramento cannabis community. Proponents argue that the initiative is a once-in-a-lifetime shot at legalization in California. Patients-rights activist Ryan Landers wants to see marijuana legal, too, but says Prop. 19 will ostracize the sickest and poorest patients. A medical-marijuana founding father who’s lived with HIV for more than 15 years, Landers says he has no choice: “I’d love to stop and enjoy what time I’ve got left,” he confesses, “but as long as patients’ lives are in jeopardy, I have to fight to change that.” Nick Miller reports.
