Yo La Tengo
Summer Sun
A year ago, the Onion ran one of its delightful parodies of sensationalist news items. Headlined “37 Record Store Clerks Feared Dead In Yo La Tengo Concert Disaster,” it contained an immortal quote: “It’s just a twisted mass of black-frame glasses and ironic Girl Scouts T-shirts in there.” Yes, this longtime Hoboken trio may appeal to rock’s more intellectual fans, but it merits attention from anyone who’s looking for new musical heroes; over the course of 10 LPs and numerous EPs, Yo La Tengo has evolved into one of America’s finest bands. This ironically wintry, late-night disc is one of its quieter efforts, though. Highlights: the shimmering “Today Is the Day,” which segues into “Tiny Birds,” and the elegant Big Star cover “Take Care.” This mellow disc gives up its treasures slowly. It’s worth the effort.
