Year of the horse (of course, of course)
One of the joys of life in a multicultural city is that the next big cultural celebration is never too far away. The novelty of welcoming 2002 has no doubt worn off, but the Chinese New Year is only just beginning. In honor of the Year of the Horse, CSUS is throwing one firecracker of a party this Saturday. Sure there will be a Chinese art exhibit, children’s activities, mouth-watering Chinese food and martial arts demonstrations by CSUS students, but it’s the daylong entertainment lineup that puts the Pow! in Kung Pao! Chinese dance groups from throughout the state will perform routines with endearing names like Butterfly Dance, Mulan Fan Dance and Happy Tambourine Dance. A lion-dragon dance troupe from the Bay Area will perform a 30-person Dragon Dance. (Be impressed. The dragon’s head alone weighs 90 pounds.) And, of course, both of the Big K’s in entertainment will be represented: karaoke and kung fu! The celebration lasts from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. at the University Union Ballroom, CSUS. Tickets are $10.
