A teenage boy reluctantly finds himself the key player in the apocalyptic clash between two forces calling themselves the Dragon of Earth and the Dragon of Heaven, with the fate of humankind in the balance. Based on a Japanese manga (comic book series), this anime film has the usual jerky movement, but without the visual richness that sometimes compensates. The threat of Armageddon is used to cover up the fact that the film’s plotline is obscure and the characters shallow and uninvolving (the insipid American voices don’t help). Oddly enough, the film, though mostly the work of women, has the usual adolescent male obsessions: control, destruction, sublimated sex and morbid fatalism. This one is strictly for devotees of anime and its elfin characters with the huge, soulful, puppy eyes.
