Work at SN&R
It’s been several months since SN&R’s first diversity intern Kris Hooks left the building and since then we’ve felt his absence in many ways.
Hooks, a Sac State journalism student, spent much of 2016 as part of our editorial team working on nearly every job imaginable. In addition to handling the paper’s Streetalk feature and writing short picks, Hooks quickly established himself as an ambitious and talented reporter. During his tenure he worked on an array of arts, culture and news stories including articles about student radio, campus rape, the Black Lives Matter movement and a cover feature on the residents who make up Oak Park.
Hooks now works at ABC10 and I’m equal parts happy for him and disappointed we didn’t hire him permanently when we had the chance.
Now it’s time for SN&R to find a new diversity intern. We’re hiring for a six-month paid internship and it’s open to college journalism students of color who are interested in taking on all aspects of working an alternative weekly.
And, no, that doesn’t require getting coffee for anyone. Rather, it involves digging into assignments, big and small. It means working with experienced editors and writers to shape ideas into realized articles, participating in group projects, covering breaking news and establishing new beats. The schedule is flexible and ideally the intern gets a portfolio of clips and real-world experience while SN&R gains new insights and perspectives.
Interested applicants should email a resume, cover letter and three clips to sactoeditor@newsreview.com and put “diversity internship” in the subject field.
Good luck!
