Willie Nelson & Ray Price
San Antonio Rose
This just-reissued 1980 record, featuring Texas country-music icons Willie Nelson and Ray Price, was a sequel to their original San Antonio Rose duet album, released by Columbia in 1960. At that time, Price was huge, but by 1980, it was Nelson who was the marquee topper. The title cut, a signature tune for Bob Wills, is joined by another Wills tune, “Faded Love,” along with the nine others from the original release plus two bonus tracks. Nelson-penned songs include “Funny How Time Slips Away” and “Night Life,” the latter a hit for Price in 1963. Relaxed familiarity is the byword, with such well-trod tunes as “I Fall to Pieces,” along with a number of Price-associated songs, all receiving the musical equivalent of being rolled in Zig-Zags, sparked and passed around the room.
