Where the Heart Is
A pregnant Tennessee teen (Natalie Portman) abandoned by her white-trash boyfriend (Dylan Bruno) takes up residency in an Oklahoma Wal-Mart for several weeks before giving birth in a deserted aisle during a furious rain storm. She is adopted by an eccentric extended family while her beau becomes a country music singer-songwriter. This sort of Fried Green Tomatoes meets Twister from Matt Williams (co-creator of Roseanne) wallows in cheap whimsy and melodrama as it deals with bad omens, alcoholism, sisterhood, child molestation, single parenting, out-of-wedlock sex, religious radicals, a tornado, severed limbs, death and unlikely romance.
