Sacramento now has a Sephora. For the uninitiated, Sephora is to makeup what Best Buy is to surge protectors. The cosmetic super-stores are infiltrating American malls faster than you can say “uneven skin tone.” Beauty buffs should know that Friday from noon until 7 p.m. is Bring Your Own Makeover Candidate Day. The idea is to select your most style-challenged friend and take them in for a free makeover. “Before and after” pictures will be displayed and customers will vote on the most dramatic transition. The winner receives a Sephora shopping spree. (Hint to contestants: Look extra ugly on arrival for better makeover results. Maybe smear dirt on your face?) However, if your inner riot grrrl bristles at this encouragement of women to judge and compete with one another to reach a corporate beauty ideal created only to sell products, feel free to creatively and non-violently make your feelings known.
