A worldwide debate is raging on the subject of genetically modified (GM) foods. Europe’s five-year moratorium on the sale, production and import of GM foods was lifted recently—on the condition that they are labeled when sold. GM-food bans are being debated in several countries, including Japan, Sri Lanka and South Korea. At the same time, the United States is constantly manufacturing new GM-food products. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration promises these new foods are safe but doesn’t require them to be tested or labeled. Jeffrey M. Smith, author of the controversial exposé Seeds of Deception, insists the American people are being sold GM foods at the risk of their health and that the political clout of the bioengineering companies has helped them circumvent our government’s food-safety procedures. Smith will speak at a lecture on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Sierra 2 Center, located at 2791 24th Street. A $5 donation is suggested. Call (916) 947-3778 or visit www.organicsacramento.org for more info.
