Wed, May 18, Vieux Farka Touré
The Center for the Arts, 7:30 p.m. $18-$20
From Femi Kuti to Amadou & Mariam, West African rhythms are the de facto sound of world music these days. Continuing in this tradition is Malian singer/guitarist Vieux Farka Touré. The 30-year-old makes atmospheric blues with a broad appeal. He performed at the World Cup in July, dazzling audiences with sheer pyrotechnic flair. Dubbed the “Hendrix of the Sahara,” Touré released his debut Fondo in 2009, and follow-up The Secret is slated for release May 24. Vieux (whose father is the beloved Ali Farka Touré) is well-regarded already thanks to brilliant live shows and being a musical ambassador. 314 W. Main Street in Grass Valley, www.vieuxfarkatoure.com.
