The first time Andrew McMahon played Sacramento was October 2001 at Capitol Garage with his former band Something Corporate. The show was packed, and McMahon, who used to tour with an old, worn upright piano covered in band stickers, had the audience frantic, at one point stomping on the keys with his feet. Since those days, Something Corporate has disbanded, and Jack’s Mannequin has emerged as McMahon’s more mature project. Despite being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia soon after the project was formed, a healthy McMahon recently returned to perform at Coachella this year and is planning a new release in August. 1417 R Street, www.jacksmannequin.com.
