Los Angeles-based trio New West combines electric and acoustic guitars to create a new kind of jazz. Guitarists John Storie, Perry Smith and Brady Cohan generate a mix of gypsy jazz, blues and raw garage jazz, with bits of country elements thrown in. Sometimes the sound is reminiscent of ambient soundscapes; other times it is sensual and smooth. And then there are songs such as “California,” which sounds like it would have appeared on a ’70s-era James Taylor album.
