Berkeley-based artist Danae Mattes likens the relationship between water and the clay from which she shapes her pieces to the soul that inhabits the human body and its connection to the earth. Water can make clay malleable, enabling the artist to shape it and create textures. Fire the clay in a kiln and the water leaves, like the soul departs dying flesh. A number of Mattes’ works, suitable as subjects for contemplating the ephemeral nature of life, are on display through September at b. sakata garo, 923 20th St. in Midtown.
