Watch your fingers
Contrary to the portrait of murderous plants depicted in such Hollywood classics as Little Shop of Horrors and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, carnivorous plants cannot harm humans. We’re simply too large and thick-skinned to be digested by them. But woe to the insect who lands on the sticky surface of a Venus’ flytrap or inside the pitcher of a nepenthes! The plant’s digestive enzymes will liquefy the insect’s body into a nutrient-filled bug smoothie. See these herbaceous carnivores in action at the Sacramento Bromeliad & Carnivorous Plant Society’s annual show and sale. Show hours are Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is free. The show is located at the Sacramento Garden and Arts Center, 3330 McKinley Boulevard.
