Wake up to some fun
Sleeping Beauty is City College theater professor and playwright Christine Nicholson’s third British-style panto, a campy music hall comedy based on a twisted reworking of a fairy tale (no pantomime involved). This year’s show features chatterbox Bradley Moates (in drag as The Dame, a plump cook with a monumental bust line and a hat like a layer-cake), Trina Palmer (baddie Nasty McPhee, stalking the stage in a flowing black cape with a shoulder-mounted raven), Kristen Myers (dashing Prince Pool Boy, nonetheless visibly female, with a braided pigtail) and Janelle La Riza (the Prince’s romantic interest, a motorcycle chick). Girl gets girl, evil is vanquished, candy is tossed into the audience. Nicole Sivell’s many costumes are outrageous. The singing is underpowered, but otherwise this silly show is lots of fun.
Sleeping Beauty, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday; $10-$15. City Theatre at California Stage, 2509 R Street; (916) 558-2228; www.citytheatre.net. Through December 18.
