Virgin Suicides, The
This interesting directorial debut for Sofia Coppola tells the story of five sisters who are a bit overprotected by their parents, resulting in the film’s title. Kirsten Dunst is excellent as Lux, the rebellious sister who becomes homecoming queen and is subsequently imprisoned by her domineering mother (a never-been-better Kathleen Turner). James Woods is great against type as the goofy father who can’t prevent his daughters’ downfalls. Coppola creates a strange fantasy feeling that makes all the film’s crazy aspects digestible. We can expect good stuff from her in the future.
