Tues, June 28, Todd Snider
Stockton Empire Theatre, 7 p.m., $20
Snider’s the back-of-the-class dope-smoking wiseass, a sharp-witted and satirical country-folk songwriter with an affection for life’s fuck ups and ne’er-do-wells from acid-dropping pitcher Dock Ellis (“America’s Favorite Pastime”) to a pool hustler and streetwalker reconnecting (“Just Like Old Times”). He’s not above rowdy fun (“Beer Run”) or political broadside (“Conservative Christian, Right-Wing Republican, Straight, White, American Males”), but mostly offers self-aware story-songs reminiscent of John Prine, as on “Alright Guy” (which Gary Allan made a No. 1 country hit). It’s like honky-tonk for the NPR set. 1825 Pacific Avenue in Stockton, www.toddsnider.net.
