Tues, June 14, Deftones
Ace of Spades, 6 p.m., $50
Prog-metal savants Deftones have been together for more than 20 years. Yet they remain horrifically, if predictably, underappreciated. Their music is inaccessible compared to former tour mates Alice in Chains and Mastodon. Perhaps that’s why they have yet to achieve the lofty critical standing and commercial clout of those bands. Still, there is something to be said for a group that can log radio spins with a song as bleak and sludgy as “You’ve Seen the Butcher.” Chalk it up to the band’s sprawling vocal fan base. The Deftones’ latest album, 2010’s Diamond Eyes, is a work of unpretentious beauty. This gig benefits Chi Cheng. 1417 R Street, www.deftones.com.
