True hula

It’s all smiles for these hula pros.

It’s all smiles for these hula pros.

As with so many touchstones in American culture, the art of Hula dancing is often reduced in public perception to no more than a stereotype. Here’s a serious chance to move beyond the simplistic notions we’ve come to know from television and film. The ninth annual E Pili Kakou I Ho’okahi Lahui Hula Retreat is for experienced hula practitioners as well as those interested in learning the art form or just more about Hawaiian culture in general. The retreat will run from Friday through Sunday at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds. Nearly 20 hula teachers and guest presenters will share their experience and expertise through workshops and performances. A one-day pass, which allows access to all the day’s activities, costs $185, and a two-day pass runs for $260.
