Touch of Pink
Birdcage sort of meets Play it Again, Sam in this tepid romantic comedy from writer-director Ian Iqbal Rashid. Gay Muslim South Asian photographer Alim (Jimi Mistry) lives in London with his male lover Giles (Kristen Holden-Reid) and communicates with the spirit of Cary Grant (Kyle MacLachlan excellently nailing the suave essence of the iconic star). His widowed mother (Suleka Mathew), unaware of Alim’s sexual preference, arrives unexpectedly for a visit, so Alim pretends Giles is merely his roommate. A casting aside of cultural and lifestyle facades looms on the horizon as all the characters search for a Hollywood ending to their personal conflicts and quandaries.
