Toot your own flute

“Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries”—probably from making freakin’ elderberry flutes.

The most memorable people in history played flutelike objects: Pan, the Pied Piper of Hamelin and Willy Wonka when he summoned the Oompa-Loompas. Those who want to have a go at flute greatness, there will be a Native Californian elderberry flute-making workshop Sunday, February 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. at UC Davis in Room 146 of the Environmental Horticulture complex. Participants will learn how to make and play a Native Californian elderberry flute. They’ll also learn about the endangered elderberry beetle. Materials will be supplied, just bring a sharpened pocket knife. For more information, call (530) 752-4880 or visit http://arboretum.ucdavis.edu.
