Tomatoes for lunch

Tomatoes have long suffered from the garnish-only stereotype.
Tomatoes are too often reduced to being a mere garnish—hidden between layers in a sandwich, chopped up for salsa or puréed for a pasta sauce. Yet, they have so much potential to be a main dish. Slow Food Sacramento will host a tomato luncheon and heirloom-tomato tasting on Sunday, August 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Grange restaurant (926 J Street) to help elevate the tomato’s status. The event includes a three-course meal prepared from tomatoes by Grange chef Michael Tuohy. Tickets are $40 per person, but do not include wine. That would take the spotlight away from the tomatoes anyway. Visit www.slowfoodsacramento.com for more information.
