Ragtime. Where ever did it go? The Devil Makes Three revives the old-style sounds of ragtime and American blues, but with enough of a rockabilly feel to appeal to those with a soft spot for stand-up bass. The song “Old Number Seven” is DMT’s sound perfected: It reveals vocalist Pete Bernhard’s lament of Jack Daniel’s whiskey, and the acoustic solo at the end of the song by guitarist Cooper McBean just kills it. But it’s the high pings of McBean’s tenor banjo that give this band a definite bluegrass feel, too, which is yet another genre to add to its growing list of style, all executed so well. 2708 J Street, www.thedevilmakesthree.com.
