Thurs, June 9, Detroit Cobras
Blue Lamp, 9 p.m., $12-$14
Starting its career signed to the same indie label the White Stripes made their debut on, the Detroit Cobras strove to become not one of the great songwriting bands of our era, but alas, one of the great cover bands. Possibly due to growing up in the music-history-rich city of Detroit, the band members might have believed that enough great music had already been created, or maybe they just couldn’t write decent material. The popularity of their punkish remaking of old soul and Motown is apparent; Spin magazine is quoted saying you should “hope and pray that they play your party.” 1400 Alhambra Boulevard, www.detroitcobras.org.
