Thurs, June 10, Mariee Sioux
Sol Collective, 8 p.m., $5
Nevada City’s Mariee Sioux makes music that falls somewhere between traditional folk and its more edgy freak-folk counterpart. Sioux’s 2007 indie label debut Faces in the Rocks marries soft acoustic-guitar melodies and an American Indian ethos with twists of pop, bluegrass and psychedelic rock. Her voice is sweet and clear but, wrapped around lyrics such as “It’s a test of courage to kiss the snake-tongued people,” easily sidesteps the trappings of twee preciousness. Sioux’s recently recorded a cover of the Cure’s “The Love Cats” for the Perfect as Cats tribute album, and here her approach is ethereal but also refreshingly upbeat—jangly even—and proof that she easily transcends genres and labels. 2574 21st Street, www.solcollective.org.
