Thurs., July 18, Musical Charis
Harlow's Restaurant & Nightclub, 9 p.m., $6
Whether you want to call it indie folk, chamber pop, retro rock or jangle punk, it doesn't matter: All these labels fit just fine. It's even better when they're combined into indie-jangle-chamber-folk-retro-punk pop, or something like that. Musical Charis is a much-loved Sacramento-based ensemble not unlike Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, mixing diverse styles, instrumentation and multiple singers into one big festive jamboree—but without the pretentious heavy-handed spirituality. Musical Charis seems to have but one goal: spreading joy—and dancing—wherever it travels. This is the release party for its latest album, Cherish the Charis, a sentiment already felt by plenty of Sacramentans. 2708 J Street, www.musicalcharis.com.
