Thurs, Jan 13, Jake Mann
Crocker Art Museum, 6 p.m., $10 museum admission
San Francisco’s Jake Mann used to call Davis home when he played with the Zim-Zims. Now the pop singer-songwriter fronts the Upper Hand, a three-piece band that marries sparkling pop-rock with an ’80s mope-rock vibe (think the Smiths, Echo & the Bunnymen). Mann’s debut album Daytime Ghost quivers with guitar frameworks that are at once richly textured and garage-y and lo-fi. A new album, Parallel South (out January 18), features 10 tracks including “Signal (Reprise),” a dreamy pulsating mix of folk rock and trance. The show is free with $10 museum admission. 216 O Street, www.jakemann.org.
