Son of a N.Y. cop and a probationary officer himself, Eddie Money quit the force, moved to California and spent a decade chasing the dream before scoring a surprise hit with his ’77 self-titled debut. Songs like “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets to Paradise” explored a blue-collar Midwestern rock sound reminiscent of Mitch Ryder. Success brought dissipation and a serious overdose. (“How’d I O.D.? It was free,” he joked.) After being laid up for almost a year, he resurrected his career with 1982’s huge No Control, scoring many more chart toppers through the ’80s before fading badly in the ’90s. Still a spirited, fun-loving performer. 575 Third Street in Napa, www.eddiemoney.com.
