Them Hills’ second album, Process, was recorded onto 2-inch tape in Los Angeles by Manny Nieto, a producer who’s worked with the likes of the Breeders, Chokebore and the 400 Blows. Still, the Nevada City band’s music retains that foothill quirky vibe. Here, singer-songwriter Dan Elkan crafted songs that roller-coaster between bouts of jittery pop, laconic sound experiments and aggressive, full-frontal noise attacks. It’s a sound that marries the gloomy sonic styles of early Cure and Joy Division with ’90s-era grunge and 2000s-era nerdy math rock. Songs such as “Candy Sores” and “All Aboard” are tiny glimpses into the minutia of love, pain and regret. 1050 20th Street, http://themhills.com.
