The Ukulele Occasional
Volume Two
The second volume of this fine periodical, edited and published by former Sacramentan Jason Verlinde, is out now, in all its perfect-bound, 108-page glory. Verlinde interviews actor William H. Macy, and investment banker Warren Buffett turns up on the letters page; guess you never know who’s going to come out as a uke fanatic. There are comics, by Sacramento artist Michael King and Winters artist Robert Armstrong (a bio strip on King Bennie Nawahi), along with plenty of fine reading by the likes of Kurt B. Reighley, American Song-Poem Music Archives curator Phil Milstein (on one-hit wonder Nervous Norvus), co-editor Michael Simmons (on ukulele master Herb Ohta), Jim Tranquada (on the uke’s Portuguese origins) and others. There’s even a pictorial section on repairing a cracked uke. Top-notch.
