The sound of pretenses falling
Spend too much time wall-watching during Second Saturday and your inner art snob might take over. Should you find yourself uttering phrases like “high-keyed, expressionist palette” and “gripping visual abstraction” and “$500 for a crushed Styrofoam cup seems perfectly reasonable,” run straight to Tribal Night and get back to your roots. The evening includes performances by three dance groups from the Brazilian Arts Center of Sacramento—not only Brazilian samba, but also belly dancing and the dynamic dance/acrobatics/combat of capoeira. Then it’s your turn to dance as DJ Larry Rodriguez spins a mix of salsa, Arabic, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms to keep the tribal beat. The pretenses don’t stand a chance. Doors open Saturday at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $5. Jamaica House, 1704 Broadway. Call 456-3312 for more information.
