The Rolling Stones: Rock and Roll Circus
Abkco Films
What a great concept! Mix the top rock acts of the late 1960s with circus acts and have the Rolling Stones as ringmasters and headliners. Originally filmed in 1968, this footage never saw the light of day until the VHS version came out about 10 years ago. It features the Stones, the Who, Jethro Tull and others. The Stones offer great live versions of “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” but my personal fave is the Who’s blistering performance of “A Quick One While He’s Away.” Here is one of the greatest pop-rock bands of all time, playing with awesome power and sophistication, making all those who follow—except the Stones—pale by comparison. Make sure to check out the interview with Pete Townshend in the bonus materials. He sheds some interesting light on the whole project.
