The Others
This ultra-spooky ghost story begins with a scream; bores deep into a moody, eerie tale of restless spirits and psychological terror; and ends with a jarring, creepy twist. On a rural English Channel island estate during the waning days of World War II, a young woman (Nicole Kidman) waits with her two children for the return of her soldier husband. Servants disappear, new servants arrive, the kids (we are told) are allergic to sunlight and the female sibling insists that supernatural intruders are wandering the manor halls. Kidman’s creamy, pale complexion and hair-trigger emotions produce a gnawing sense of dread as we are told with suspect conviction that “the lord would never allow such an aberration as the living mixed up with the dead.”
