The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Alan Moore’s “graphic novel” (known to most of the free world as a comic book) has been shaped into a rather bloated and blunted super-hero adventure. Classic fictional literary characters such as Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah), The Invisible Man (Tony Curran) and Dr. Jekyll (Jason Flemyng) are brought together in Victorian England by the secret service to stop the villainous genius Fantom from starting a world war. This grouping of extraordinary egos brushes against the personality flaws and clashes that initially make the film intriguing, but then the film slips into a special-effects extravaganza with a monstrous, rampaging Mr. Hyde headlining. The movie was directed by Stephen Norrington (
Blade).
