The jazz singer
The local jazz scene may not be in expansion mode right now—the Artiz Jazz Club in Folsom has shuttered, NPR station KXJZ has moved toward a talk-radio format by day and more “light” (read: smooth) jazz by night—but there are still a few gems to be found on local club calendars. Consider
Kathi Elmore, a vocalist who will be performing an evening of standards and jazz numbers on Friday, November 16, at Aces Supper Club, 5321 Date Ave., near the Madison Avenue exit off I-80 in Foothill Farms. Elmore met her husband, Duane, who will be on hand to play trumpet and flugelhorn, on an Air Force “Tops in Blue” tour of Korea that featured Jerry “My Mother the Car” Van Dyke as MC and Frank Gorshin (aka “the Riddler” on Batman) doing standup. The musical couple will be accompanied by Markus Burger on piano and Corrin Stigall on bass. Show starts at 9 p.m.; cover’s $7 or, if you’re a college student, $4.
