The family that paints together …

Ever imagined yourself walking right into a painting? David Hollowell has. Many of the drawings and paintings by this University of California at Davis art professor feature backgrounds taken from classic sources, with rather aloof figures placed in the foreground whose presence comments on what they stand before. This month, various pieces by Hollowell, some of them exuding an ironic take on Norman Rockwell-style Americana, will hang at b. sakata garo, and you can go stand in front of them, too. The show Hollowell, Family & Friends will feature a performance by Hollowell’s daughter Loie Hollowell—whose paintings, sculptures and fabric designs are also on display—at 7:30 p.m. on (second) Saturday, October 12. Also showing are comic panels by Hollowell’s wife, Terry Cronan, and works by Hector. The show will remain up through Halloween. The gallery is located at 923 20th Street, and it is open from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
