The death of moths
The California Department of Food and Agriculture recently announced a plan to use wasps as pest control. The tiny wasps (Trichogramma platneri) will kill larvae of light brown apple moths, fruit- and leaf-eating pests residing in Sacramento and San Luis Obispo. The wasps are stingerless, no bigger than a grain of rice and will not harm people or pets. The decision of using wasps as pesticide is seen as more sustainable and safe than using chemicals, and was praised by the Sacramento group Pesticide Watch. The apple moth originates from Australia and has destroyed crops there and in New Zealand.
