Swindle, The
Claude Chabrol’s satiric caper feels somewhat dated, but offers a rascally scenario involving shifting and shiftless human relationships. Professional con artists Betty and Victor (Isabelle Huppert and Michel Serrault) lure conventioneers into sharing a few cocktails, drug them and steal their IDs and money. One mark turns out to be a bag man for the mob and a question arises as to whether Betty’s allegiance lies with her new lover, her crime partner or only herself. This ambiguous farce is fueled by gorgeous globe-trotting, cheeky characterizations and slick twists.
