Step one in cartoon publishing

Cartooning Class

If you’re like me, you’ve always wanted to be a cartoonist. And, if you’re like me, you have no skills. No problem. Robert Armstrong, known for his Mickey Rat comic books, as well as his illustrations in the Couch Potato series (he also illustrates R.V. Scheide’s weekly Race to the Bottom column that appears in our paper every week), is here to help.

For a few bucks, Armstrong is letting go of his secrets. He’ll teach you everything from pen and ink drawing to the subtle nuances of using word balloons. The goal is for each student to create a one-page comic that’s fit for print. Our favorite cartoon will appear in an upcoming issue in the SN&R.

The six-week course in Winters (90-minute sessions on Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7 p.m.) begins on April 14. Registration is $70. For more information or to register, call (530) 795-2009.

Proceeds from this class benefit the Winters Center for the Arts scholarship fund.
