Steers and stripes forever

Every year, the city of Folsom hosts a cattle drive to kick off the Folsom Pro Rodeo (visit www.folsomprorodeo.com for more details on the rodeo). Approximately 50 long-horned steers, herded by cowboys, will take a leisurely stroll—after all, this isn’t Pamplona, Spain—down historic Sutter Street in Folsom. The procession also will feature flag-toting cowgirls, chuck wagons (chock-full of local dignitaries) and Wild West performers. Arrive early (it starts at 6 p.m. this Friday) and stake your claim along the parade route. Then, stick around for the Steers and Stripes Block Party, which will be held from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Guests will enjoy a barbecue dinner and a performance by Wonderbread 5. Tickets for the block party are $15 for general admission, and free for children 12 and younger (when accompanied by an adult). It won’t cost a penny to watch the parade. Call (916) 985-2698 for more information.
