Steak out
Floating like an anachronistic island in a sea of progress, Lil Joe’s Over Million Steaks Sold remains Sacramento’s quintessential diner, circa 1935. Seems like nothing’s changed here in more than 50 years, including the prices. Where else are you going to get steak and eggs—featuring an enormous slab of charred, gristly beef that takes up half the plate—for just $6.95? True, Lil Joe’s is a pleasure perhaps best experienced in an inebriated state, but don’t let that stop you from showing up the morning after to nurse your hangover. Nothing jolts the system back to life better than eggs to order, crispy hash browns, and large hunks of rare, juicy meat. Not feeling up to it today? Have no fear. Unlike a certain frou-frou art gallery that recently closed its doors on Del Paso Boulevard, Lil Joe’s is here to stay.
