Soul Survivors
A college student (Melissa Sagemiller) has strange supernatural experiences after surviving an auto accident in which her boyfriend (Casey Affleck) is killed: seeing him around every corner and imagining herself pursued by sinister characters she met at a rave in an abandoned church. Director Steve Carpenter’s script rummages through a closetful of horror-movie cliches and drags them all out sooner or later. He piles them up but doesn’t bother to connect one with the next and the story makes no sense; Carpenter’s attempts at suspense and atmosphere only emphasize the triteness. Carpenter tries to tie all the bits together with a “surprise” ending, but it’s really just an eye-rolling cop-out. It’s not even much of a surprise; in fact, Carpenter foolishly telegraphs the ending with his title.
