Sing
A koala impresario (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) tries to revive his failing theater with a singing competition; contestants include a harried pig housewife (Reese Witherspoon), a juvenile delinquent gorilla (Taron Egerton), a rockin’ porcupine (Scarlett Johansson), a shy elephant (Tori Kelly) and a mouse with a Sinatra complex (Seth MacFarlane)—Zootopia meets American Idol. The characters are animals for no reason other than that’s what the animators felt like animating, the jokes are lame and the songs are a mix of pop oldies and originals—but the new stuff is dull and forgettable, while the oldies are dismissed after a few bars before we can even start tapping our feet, as if writer-director Garth Jennings can’t wait to get on to the next pointless scene. And at 108 minutes, it’s far too long. J.L.
