Simply spare

“Turned Away,” by Karin Carter, charcoal on paper.
Sometimes things get mixed up. Sacramento resident Karin Carter is currently displaying a mix of her artwork on Old Soul at the Weatherstone’s walls (812 21st Street), and while her minimalist approach is as satisfying as a good cup of brew, her small, pastel-hued, knotted wood wall pieces do throw viewers for a loop. They look unfinished with their rough edges, but no worries: Her larger 3-D wall hangings—asymmetrical, gently curving white-painted planks that resemble rubber squeegees or raked sand in a Zen garden on espresso-colored frames—are refined in their simplicity and elegance. Similarly spare are Carter’s charcoal sketches of the back of a bald man’s head: simple studies, but delicate and ghostly. Witness the mix through June 11.
