Watch James’s face fall as his wife of three months tells their therapist that her husband is her soul mate—a feeling she’s only had about 10 other men. “I’ve slept with, like, 200 people,” she explains, “so 10 is not that many.” As the two seasons of Bravo’s unscripted comedy about the rocky foundations of wedded bliss suggest, you never really know someone, even after you promise to stay with them forever. Despite taking place largely inside a therapist’s office, the improvised nature of the show (which necessitates frequent jump cuts) doesn’t allow for much sincere soul-searching. But any couple feeling the strain of issues like parenting, infidelity, financial disputes and jealousy could probably benefit more from a good self-reflexive laugh—which this show definitely delivers.
