Shall We Kiss?
After an enchanted evening with an attractive stranger, (Michaël Cohen), an attractive woman (Julie Gayet) stalls his farewell kiss with a cautionary tale of attractive friends (Virgine Ledoyen and Emmanuel Mouret) who became lovers, much to the dismay of the respective (and attractive) lovers (Stefano Accorsi and Frédérique Bel) they already had. Is writer-director Mouret—who stars in his own beautifully peopled, smartly calibrated, classical music-enhanced farce of bourgeois romantic reticence and neurotic politesse—embracing or mocking the notion that he’s an heir to Eric Rohmer? Is he bowing before Woody Allen or making fun of him? That the mind wanders toward such questions is better at least than drifting completely away, but of course it also says something about the mixed blessings of date-movie lightness.
