Writer/director Billy Morrissette had a perverse inspiration—what if McDonald’s were called McBeth’s? Morrissette follows through on that high-concept idea by turning Shakespeare’s “Scottish Tragedy” into a hilariously wicked black comedy, with cook Joe McBeth (James LeGros) and his wife Pat (Maura Tierney) conspiring to control their burger joint by murdering boss Norm Duncan—while Lt. Ernie McDuff (Christopher Walken) investigates the murder. The ’70s trappings adapt wittily to the story, with three hippies (Andy Dick, Amy Smart, Tim Levitch) standing in for the Bard’s “weird sisters.”
