Sat, Oct 31, Art Brut
UC Davis, 7 p.m., $10-$15
Twentieth-century French artist Jean Dubuffet coined the term “art brut” to describe anything that fell under the “outsider art” umbrella. In 2003, a European indie band co-opted the phrase as its name, but for Art Brut the moniker hardly translates to anything marginalized. Instead, its sound is moody and tortured yet also poppy and danceable. Pixies’ founder Frank Black produced the London-based band’s third album, and the resulting disc, Art Brut vs. Satan, is impishly subversive. Highlights include “Alcoholics Unanimous,” which marries a lowbrow party ethos with a Talking Heads-esque musical sophistication. 1 Shields Avenue at UC Davis; www.artbrut.org.uk.
