Sat, Oct 24, Fate Under Fire
Club Retro, 6:30 p.m., $10-$12
Far covered Ginuwine’s “Pony”; it was goofy enough to let pass, as covers should be. Locals Fate Under Fire did a great job with their Soulja Boy “Kiss Me Thru the Phone” cover, but the polished ditty is just too tidy, too straightforward to really dig. You gotta ham it up, fellas—like Jonah Matranga hitting those R&B falsetto moments. Anyway, go to Club Retro this weekend to see the Soulja cover live, stay for FUF’s hypergenteel nu-rock vibe, like on their hit “The Simple Things,” what with its efficient riff virtuosity and uptempo pop-rock appeal. They play with Bidwell. 6521 Hazel Avenue in Orangevale; www.myspace.com/fateunderfire.
