A great band with a so-so name, Blues Control’s moniker is apropos of a band that you think will suck but ultimately blows your gulliver, expecting, say, lowest-common-denominator, really bad John Popper, but getting lulling harmonies that crescendo into fuzz-drenched guitar meanderings, tied down with jazzy piano riffs and winsome atmospherics. The new(er) album, Local Flavor—no, it’s not an homage to regional produce—is full of lo-fi rock good times, janky ditties that come close to being tacky jams (no vocals), but that always endear.
